So excited that you will get to speak to Alice McDermott and love this description of her work! Her characters are so real and flesh-and-blood. I remember reading "These Short, Dark Days" and the part where the nun is trying to be very patient and generous but also she has a full bladder and really needs to pee... brilliant. Not sure I've read any other short story with that specific example of an embodied mundane (and realistic) sensation
Re: Warehouses: I feel you absolutely achieved this:
"I wanted to write someone who was not so hemmed in by cynical social programming, someone almost naive and open to contact with others even though he doesn’t really know how to begin it."
For me the standout aspect of the story is Per's disarmingly open nature - and the effect it has on others. Lovely to read.
My mood always lifts when I see a Sweater Weather in my inbox.
Looking forward to reading more about Per, the lamb
So jelz you get to talk to McDermott! She is the living GOAT. I'll watch.
She is so cool. I'm excited. And nervous, lol.

That is an excerpt from her novel The Ninth Hour! I recommend the full novel, it's one of the best books I've ever read.
Oooo I had no idea it was an excerpt from a longer book - adding it to my to read list; so excited!

Love McDermott's work. Can't wait.
